Cotton is the main cash crop and
contributes significantly to the national
economy. It accounts for 11.5 percent of value
added in agriculture and about 2.8 percent of
GDP. In addition to providing raw material is a
major export item. |
| |
|
Production of cotton is
provisionally estimated at 10.7 million bales
for 2000-01, which is 4.5 percent lower than
last year. |

The shortage of irrigation water
in Sindh is mainly responsible for lower
production. Cotton was cultivated on an area of
2927 thousand hectares, which was 1.9 percent
lower than last year (2983 thousand hectares).
The cotton yield per hectare also declined by
2.7 percent. Area, production and yield of
cotton for the last five years are given in
Table 2.3 and production from the year 1990-91. |
